How to Apply: General Guidelines for All Applicants

To be eligible for funding, your organization must work within our focus areas and be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.  We will accept proposals for project support or seed funding for new programs at established organizations. For organizations that have received previous grants from the Sand Hill Foundation, we will from time to time also consider capital, capacity building and general operating support.

Proposals in the focus areas of Alleviating Poverty, Preserving and Protecting the Environment and Capital Needs are accepted at any time. There are no proposal deadlines.  The Sand Hill Foundation's grant amounts vary, depending on the specific project and the applicant organization's needs.  Instructions for how to submit a request for funding in these areas is detailed below.

In 2010, we are launching the Out-of-School-Time Collaborative in partnership with SV2 and the David & Lucile Packard Foundation.  Applications are due Friday, March 5th by 5:00 PM.  Click on New Initiative to access a description of this program.

The Sand Hill Foundation does not provide loans or fund individuals, deficit funding, medical research, or efforts designed to influence legislation or elect public officers.  The Foundation will only support organizations with strong and consistently applied non-discrimination policies.  While each proposal is thoroughly reviewed, we regret that it is impossible to fund every worthwhile request.

How To Submit a Request For Funding

In the effort to streamline the funding process, all prospective grantees that fall within the Sand Hill Foundation's focus areas are asked to submit a one page letter of inquiry by email or U.S. Postal mail.  This letter will be reviewed generally within three weeks and should include the following information:

1. Amount requested, intended use of funding, timeframe and total cost to achieve stated goals.
2. How the request fits the Sand Hill Foundation's focus areas.
3. Amount of organization's operating budget.
4. Verification of your organization's nonprofit status and non-discrimination policies.

Applicants to the Out-of-School-Time Collaborative should follow the instructions on the New Initiative portion of this web site.  A letter of inquiry is not required for this program.
